In this month’s spotlight feature, we interview James Clack, Business Development Manager (Product) to find out more about his role at Active IQ.
Q. Tell us about your role at Active IQ, how long have you worked here and what do you most enjoy?
A. I have been working for Active IQ for just over three years. I initially worked as an External Verifier within our awesome Quality Assurance team and subsequently took a position as a Business Development Manager within our equally awesome Business Development team. My role has since developed to have more of a focus on product development so I get to work closely with key departments of the business. I’ve got a real passion for the power of education – having worked in both Further Education and Private Training for over 15 years and I love supporting our customers in developing their businesses – especially from a teaching, learning and quality perspective. I’m also a bit of a technology geek so I’m always looking for innovative ways to bring technology into what we do.
Q. What advice can you give people who aspire to be where you are?
A. This is a difficult one – I’d like to think I’ve always worked hard and challenged myself to achieve the things I want but I am also acutely aware that I have been fortunate enough to have been in the right place at the right time on many occasions. That said, the best bit of advice I could give is as follows: graft, go the extra mile, be true to your morals and most of all be curious.
Q. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A. First and foremost, a professional athlete, but failing that, either a Doctor or an Architect.
Q. Tell us something we would never guess about you?
A. I was a bit of a DJ back in my Uni days and for a few years after finishing my degree.
Q. What is the best advice you have ever been given?
A. I’m not really one for advice if I’m honest, and certainly I can’t say that anything really stands out. Don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate advice – especially when the odds aren’t in my favour but I prefer to figure things out in my own way. I have two rules I try to stick to though:
- If something is that important to you, pursue it no matter what and,
Q. Which exercise do you most enjoy?
A. I’ve always loved running – but I enjoy most forms of exercise. I just wish I made more time to do it! I’ve recently discovered a love for Stand Up Paddleboarding and living near the sea, I’m hoping to do more of it once spring arrives.
Q. Any hidden talents?
A. Hypnosis! I learnt it whilst studying NLP and had some mixed success helping people deal with phobias and habit busting – so probably a semi-talent in that case.
Q. How would people describe you in three words?
A. Dependable, creative and a realist.
