Introduction

A specialist qualification which provides the essential knowledge and skills required by those who wish to pursue a career in Active Leisure.

All units are structured with a vocational emphasis giving candidates the opportunity to gain a nationally accredited qualification which provides the essential knowledge, techniques and personal qualities required for an occupation in this sector.


Entry requirements

  • No specific previous experience required
  • This qualification is open to all
  • A basic level of numeracy and literacy is required.

Target candidates

  • 16 – 19 year olds
  • Full time college or sixth form learners
  • Those considering a career in the sport and recreation industry whether in health and fitness, outdoor or indoor activities

Please note that 16-19 year olds may need to be supervised in the workplace, once they have achieved the qualification

Qualification structure

Mandatory Grouping A
This qualification has ten core mandatory units each, unit comprising 20 GLH (total 200 GLH)

  • Unit 1 – Administration and Communication in Sport and Recreation (J/500/8135)
  • Unit 2 – Child Protection and Disability Awareness in Sport and Recreation (K/500/8130)
  • Unit 3 – Customer Service in Sport and Recreation (M/500/8128)
  • Unit 4 – Health and Exercise Participation (T/500/8132)
  • Unit 5 – Health and Safety in Sport and Recreation (H/500/8126)
  • Unit 6 – Sport and Recreation Facility Preparations and Cleanliness (T/500/8129)
  • Unit 7 – Sport and Recreation Reception Skills (F/500/8134)
  • Unit 8 – Sports Hall Operations (M/500/8131)
  • Unit 9 – Swimming Pool operations (A/500/8133)
  • Unit 10 – Working with People in Sport and Recreation (K/500/8127).

Plus a minimum of six optional units from the following (to make up the minimum 450 GLH):

  • Unit 11 – Operating Outdoor Activities (M/501/4835)
  • Unit 12 – Special Events Operations (T/501/4836)
  • Unit 13 – Developing Sporting Activities for the Community (A/501/4837)
